From Planning to Strategic Alignment in Mining Services 

Who We Worked With

A group of specialist companies providing technical solutions to the mining industry. With 50 staff across offices in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, the group had grown rapidly since its founding 5 years ago. Each subsidiary had its own focus and director, with 5 directors collectively responsible for setting the direction of the group. They were in a high-growth, early expansion phase and knew they needed to move beyond financial planning to a more holistic approach to strategy. 

The Challenge

The directors met annually to set the group’s direction, but the process had historically centred on numbers rather than strategy. This limited their ability to step back and consider the bigger picture. 

Several challenges surfaced:

  • Growth had outpaced the systems and processes in place
  • Directors held implicit understandings around issues like risk appetite that weren’t being made explicit or aligned
  • Retention was becoming a pressure point
  • Without a clear process, conversations risked defaulting to the familiar 
They recognised the need for structure, deeper thinking and a plan that could communicate ambition while guiding culture and decision-making. 

Our Approach

We worked with the directors to design a structured process that balanced ambition with practicality. 

Our involvement included a mix of workshop design, facilitation and consulting hours to:

  • Design the agenda for their first workshop, which they self-facilitated
  • Lead a second workshop to finalise the strategy and create a 90-day implementation plan
  • Update the group’s vision and values statements to reflect their evolving identity
  • Produce a Strategy-on-a-Page with speaking guidelines for directors to ensure consistent communication 
The process encouraged directors to step back from day-to-day financial focus and engage in deeper discussions around vision, culture and long-term direction. It also surfaced alignment that had been sitting beneath the surface, helping them make implicit assumptions explicit.

The Outcome

  • A strategy that moved beyond numbers to encompass vision, values and long-term direction
  • Updated vision and values aligned with the group’s growth
  • A 90-day implementation plan with clear priorities
  • Improved consistency in how directors communicated the strategy across the group

  • Directors pushed beyond their comfort zone, particularly in the way they communicated with their teams
