Setting Clear Strategic Direction in an Industrial Services Company

Who We Worked With

A well-established services business supporting major industrial, infrastructure and resource projects. It operates across multiple regions and environments in Western Australia where safety, precision and coordination are key. 

The Challenge

The business had spent the past 12 months focused on stabilising operations after a period of financial stretch, market shifts and internal change. With stronger foundations in place, the next challenge looked different.

The Board and Executive Leadership Team needed to:

  • Set a clear strategic direction that reflected current realities and future ambition
  • Align on priorities and decision-making authority
  • Engage senior leaders below the executive level to support implementation
  • Create genuine buy-in so the strategy translated into clear action
Without this alignment, there was a risk that momentum would slow, execution would fragment and leadership confidence would erode just as the business was ready to grow again. 

Our Approach

We worked with the Board and Executive Leadership Team to design and facilitate a strategy process that balanced rigour with honest conversation.

Using Reimagine Consulting’s Five Step Strategy Process, we focused first on creating the right conditions: 

  • One-on-one interviews were conducted ahead of the workshop to surface any tensions, assumptions and unspoken issues
  • The session were held offsite in Perth to encourage perspective and depth
  • Progress and wins were acknowledged
  • Key financial drivers were explored to ground strategic choices 

Then we clarified the organisation’s “North Star”. Together, we explored:

  • Whether the mission and vision still reflected where the business was heading
  • How well the stated values were being lived in day-to-day decisions and behaviours

A SWOT analysis was prepared in advance, drawing on insights from across the leadership group. This allowed the session to move quickly beyond surface observations and into the strategic choices facing the business.

From there, the focus shifted to decisions:

  • What mattered most in the next phase of growth
  • Where leadership attention needed to be directed

Following the workshop, the strategic plan was drafted and refined. Clear expectations were set around:

  • The role of the Board in governing and supporting the strategy
  • The role of senior leaders in leading, communicating and executing
  • The processes and capabilities required to support delivery
A second workshop was then held with senior leaders to deepen understanding of the business model and value drivers, ensuring leaders could confidently translate strategy into operational decisions.

The Outcome

  • A clear, practical strategic plan with agreed priorities
  • Stronger alignment between Board, Executive and senior leaders
  • Improved quality of strategic conversation and decision-making
  • Clearer roles and expectations for leaders in implementation

Intangible results:

  • Increased confidence across the leadership group
  • Stronger relationships and trust at Board and executive level
  • Renewed energy and focus as the business moved into growth 

Leaders left with a shared view of where the business was heading and how they would lead together to get there.

Reflection

This engagement helped shift the organisation from cautious recovery into confident forward motion, with a clear strategy, aligned leadership and the foundations in place to execute well.
